Limenitis populi – Haapaperhonen – grote IJsvogelvlinder
Haapaperhonen is a large butterfly that is present every year, but only in low numbers.
The caterpillers feed on Populus tremules (Haapa) and overwinter in a cocoon made of Haapa leaves.
Adult butterflies often can be found resting on forerst roads where they are easily killed by car traffic.
The butterfly does not visit flowers to feed. However it might feed on dung and karkases.
