L. virgaureae or Loistokultasiipi is very colourful and males are easy to recognize.

The larvae feed on Rumex species and overwinter in the egg stage.

The butterflies are mainly found along species-rich roads, and not near new forest-clearing roads.

Usually, L. virgaureae is a common species in Liesjärvi, but in the summer of 2015 somehow it was extremily rare.

The caterpillars are active during the night.
